Longhair

Written and photographed by Ursula Jorch

This cool beauty is a wild horse who lives in northern New Mexico. To me, he’s both hip and knowing at the same time – a groovy sage.

I photographed this dude with my friend David, who shared with me the wild horse herds that were his passion. We walked out among the horses, who tentatively approach and watch, curious. Longhair was a horse apart with his long mane, like a teenage boy with hair falling in his eyes. That association made me smile. Yet watching him filled me with peace.

There’s another part to this story: my friend David worked to preserve the environment and the wildness of these horses. Those are both treasures in the world, as was David, an awesome photographer and a peaceful and gentle soul. He died suddenly, a few weeks after this image was made, doing what he loved. That is certainly a gift, but I miss the gift of David in the world. So part of my sharing of this image is the sharing of what David gave to me.

Thanks, man! I love you still.

  22. Ursula,
Awesome image and quite the picture you painted with the brief story.
    Touching.

I love the title of your blog and can’t wait to see more. I’m guessing from the title we may get to read about your ventures here in a little more detail then your Facebook teasers… in anticipation…
